Wind Dancer

Postby Mr. Midnight’s Mom on Tue Feb 09, 2010 1:08 am

People who love horses are connected at some visceral level, I believe. I also believe that the Universe puts us where we need to be when we need to be, especially in times of need.

Some of you may recall that our President, Edie Jeffas, was going to take in the starving mare from South Carolina about six weeks ago. It was believed the mare was in foal. In preparation for the mare’s arrival in Georgia, Edie was led to Barbara, who upon learning the blanket’s intended use, gladly gave it to Edie.

Sadly, the South Carolina mare did not get to make the trip to Georgia. Shortly after meeting Edie, Barbara joined One Horse at a Time’s discussion forum and introduced us to her human and horse family.

The following is a story about Wind Dancer, the little girl who loves him, a family separated by war, and a pressing need.

(Told in Barbara’s own words for the most part)

January

Wind Dancer is a Mustang-Appaloosa cross whose dam was very ill and couldn’t produce enough milk for him. Although grain was provided, his dam ate it all. Not much hay was available, and the enclosure was 6 inches deep in mud and manure. There was a stallion in a pen beside the mare and her colt, so she was very violent and defensive. He was not growing and was in a bad way. Eva fell in love with him, and raised $100 by herself to purchase him at 4.5 months old last October. He is malnourished, has swollen fetlocks, and is infested with parasites, but we are working with our vet to get him on track. He is now 11 hands high but weighs only 277 lbs, only half what he should weigh. We have a long road ahead in getting him healthy, but he has the unconditional love of one very special little girl with a huge heart to see him through the rough times.  READ MORE
